This is a gruelling but extremely rewarding and enjoyable hike. The route approaches Fairfield from the north-east, starting in Patterdale, as opposed to the more commonly walked route from Rydal or Ambleside to the south. The start of the walk is very steep and will get your heart rate up straight away! It's uphill almost relentlessly until you reach St Sunday Crag, then there's a bit of respite and a short downhill section before the final (steep!) ascent to the top of Fairfield. There are some spectacular views from the ridge between St Sunday Crag and Fairfield. After walking on to Hart Crag there are some tricky rocky sections on the way down, so take care here. Frankie and I were very grateful for a rest and a beer when we got back to the hostel!
