This is a stunning hike through the Samaria Gorge on the island of Crete. The path is mostly downhill, but is sometimes tricky underfoot as there is a lot of loose rock (I twisted my ankle quite early on, so it was a sore walk for me! There are some mules on the way to facilitate an emergency escape, but I didn't resort to that...) The views are absolutely incredible throughout the hike, and if you're in Crete it is absolutely worth setting aside a day for this trip. You can get a public bus to the start point from Chania (no need to book onto a tour). At the end of the walk, at Agia Roumeli, there are a few cafés and a black sand beach (which was absolutely scorching underfoot on a very hot summer's day!) From there, a ferry takes you to Sougia, where a connecting coach will take you back to Chania bus station.
